Big Issue London to Berlin Charity Bike Ride 2010

Charity: The Big Issue Foundation
Challenge:  London to Berlin Bike Ride
Dates: 01/01/2000 -01/01/2000
Deposit: £ 99
Minimum Sponsorship: £  1700
Grade:  Moderate

Day 1 – London to Dover to Cuxhaven
130kms/80 miles
We meet early on Tuesday morning in London (exact location TBC). Following a light breakfast, briefing and safety talk we will divide up into our different guided groups. We head out of London along the river to Greenwich, Woolwich south of Gravesend towards Rochester staying north of Ashford to Dover. We avoid main roads wherever possible.
On arrival in to Dover we board the ferry to Calais. We will eat dinner (not included) on the ferry over to France. On arrival we will be met by a coach, which will drive us through the night to Cuxhaven, Germany.

Day 2 – Cuxhaven to Hamburg
105kms/66 miles
On arrival in Cuxhaven we will be greeted with a full English breakfast, changing facilities and are reunited with our bikes (there will be plenty of help available from our guides). Once we are re-energised, changed and ready to go, we will set off on our bikes again. Over the next 4 days we follow the River Elbe. Leaving the spa town and North Sea breeze of Cuxhaven behind us, we pass beautiful thatched houses, green fields and orchards that have been around for many 100s of years. The route is on quiet roads or a dedicated cycle path mostly alongside the river.

Day 3 – Hamburg to Lenzen
163kms/100 miles
Leaving the busy town of Hamburg we head out for our 100 mile day. We leave behind the dams and the buildings with the route taking us through medieval villages, past age old dykes, through meadows and forests, along country paths and generally away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Day 4 – Lenzen to Semlin
109kms/68 miles
After a good night’s sleep we are back on our bikes for another day’s fantastic cycling through rural Germany. The River Elbe used to be the border between east and west Germany. It shows its heritage with disused watch towers and small local ferries dotting the banks instead of bridges. Stork nests abound atop of chimney and on stork nesting posts as we pass through an impressive stork sanctuary.

Day 5 – Semlin to Berlin
85kms/53 miles
The final leg of our journey is here. The shortest of all the days and the most exciting as we near ever closer to Berlin and our finish. The landscape changes once more from rural to more urban and we encounter a few cobbled roads on the last few kilometres into Berlin.
We celebrate our epic ride at the Olympic Stadium and then cycle the remaining few kilometres to our accommodation for the night. Time to shower and change and then celebrate our 360 miles with a hearty meal and maybe a schnapps!
Dinner & overnight accommodation in Berlin.

Day 6 – Berlin to London
Free Day! After all that pedalling to Berlin you can now relax and explore all that Berlin has to offer before checking in for your afternoon flight back to London.
